Yamato Empire Chapter 93

Chapter 93: Lynn and the Siege

I, Lynn Foreclaude, am on the battlefield.

On the walls of the town of Thame, illuminated only by the moonlight and torches.

There, while leading the 10 soldiers who were entrusted to her, she is fighting against the approaching monsters.

The town walls are a stronghold that protects the town. On top of that, it is extremely chaotic with soldiers moving around.

A sudden monster raid in the middle of the night when everyone is resting. Although everyone had gathered in a great hurry, no one had fully grasped the situation.

Even around me, the soldiers are desperately running around on top of the walls, taking up their positions, but…

“Hey, where should my squad go?”

“You are assigned to the west gate! We will guard the north gate.”

“The west gate! Got it, do your best!”

“Yeah, you too… Hey, hold on a second, that way is east! The west gate is the opposite!”

I can’t help but shrug my shoulders. Can we really able to fight with these guys?

I turn around and look at the soldiers behind me. Ten adventurers who were entrusted to me.

Well, in terms of being an adventurer, would I say they are second-rate? They don’t look very strong in their dirty worn-out leather armor.

Should it be said that it’s characteristic of an adventurer, or should it be said that it’s uncharacteristic of a soldier?

They basically do not have the norms that a military organization should have.

All of them said, “Okay, let’s do it. Missy, let’s do our best together.” or “Hey, missy, where are we going?” And so on…

Do these guys understand? I am still their superior officer, am I not? You know, a person who has been given a position as a military officer by Her Majesty the Queen? Seriously, it’s annoying.

Oh well. It’s no use being overly dissatisfied.

Our forces, consisting of around 1,000 conscripted adventurers and the brave citizens of the town of Thame, for a total of about 2,000.

On the other hand, there are about 1,000 monsters just by looking at them. For now, it seems we have the upper hand in terms of numbers, but we cannot let our guard down at all.

As for us, there are adventurers who are experienced fighters who have seen many battles but lack formal military training, and then there are ordinary citizens who don’t even know how to fight.

A lot of the monsters that are approaching are quite powerful, such as ogres.

Even taking into account the point that it’s a defensive battle, in terms of military strength, we’re evenly matched.

Because it’s a shooting battle from atop the town walls, we can fight on equal terms, but if it comes to close combat, I cannot deny that we would be at a disadvantage. How to prevent monsters from climbing the walls will be the focus of the battle.

“…Hey, you over there, what is the status of the battle? Is the gates still safe?”

“Hah, what it is, you… Ah, it’s you noble missy? East, west, south, and north, all the gates are safe. However, it seems to be blocked by monsters, and it is impossible to get in and out.”

I call out to an adventurer with bad breath from another group who just happened to be passing by to ask him about the situation.

……The gates are still intact. Then we can fight.

Those monsters do not have the intelligence to make tools. Therefore, they do not use ladders or siege towers. As long as the gates remain intact, they have no choice but to either destroy the walls or climb over them one after another using their comrades as a foothold.

That’s our chance. If you shoot them when they come up defenselessly climbing the wall, you can easily defeat them.

When I look around, I can see that friendly soldiers are already on the ramparts, continuously shooting arrows and casting spells, whittling down the monsters trying to scale the walls.

……It’s not enough to just watch. I have to fight too.

I lean out of the walls and look down.

I locked eyes with a goblin that was climbing the wall, using its comrades as stepping stones. He sneered, extended his hand, and tried to move towards where I was.

It’s quite close.

If it climbs just another meter, it will probably reach the place where we are.

I won’t allow you to do it.

I raise my staff and then chant a spell, unleashing a wind blade spell.

The wind blade, which is my specialized magic, sliced through the goblin’s chest in one strike, and the exhausted goblin fell headlong toward the ground.

“I-I manage to fend it somehow. Hey, what are you doing, soldiers! Go ahead, send magic and arrows from above the walls!”

“Hey, noble missy… Nice ass, I’m in love with it.”

“It’s different from my wife’s saggy ass, I really want to suck on it.”

 ……!

These fools, I thought it was merely a lack of discipline, where on earth are they in during the battle…

When I looked back, there was a soldier of mine grinning while preparing his bow. What a vulgar, low-quality soldier. Excellency Eryutheia would be saddened if she knew such a soldier existed.

Seeing the extraordinary level of skill displayed by the Yamato soldiers in the parade at the entrance ceremony, it’s evident at a glance the high standards she demands from her soldiers.

An impeccably coordinated march and the spirit of standing in formation for hours without the slightest movement. All of them are first-class soldiers.

Compared to such soldiers, how poorly trained our soldiers are.

……However, I can’t get angry because this can’t be helped.

It takes a lot of work.

I regret that I failed.

I volunteered for military service with a bit of ulterior motive… No, I ended up volunteering.

Excellency Eryutheia seems to like the military and such things, so if I volunteer for military service here, her favor toward me will probably increase. If Excellency Eryutheia’s affection for me increases, things like this and that might happen… How wonderful.

It’s just a ridiculous story.

But it’s also true that I never thought this would happen.

No matter what is in the forest, we have an army of 1,000 on our side. I thought things would work out somehow.

But, what about it?

“Hey, noble missy! It’s Ogres! 10 Ogres are charging towards us!”

“W-what!? Is that true? Are they coming this way?”

“No, not this way. But it’s right over there at the north gate. It’ll be bad if we don’t cover them.”

I was surprised when my subordinates reported that my heart was about to burst for a moment. But the next moment I felt a little relief.

Ogre.

It is a humanoid monster with bulging muscles, standing well over two meters tall, and possesses combat abilities far beyond those of humans.

Although they do not cast magic or breathe fire, they can sweep away dozens of intermediate adventurers with just their physical abilities.

As a monster, they would be classified as intermediate or advanced.

I’m confident in my abilities, if it was a one-on-one fight, that would be one thing, but ten of them coming at me, that would be the end of me.

At this rate… even with 5 meters of walls, they would probably break through it in an instant with their superior physical abilities and come swing at us.

While feeling relieved that they didn’t come this way, I look toward the gate where the ogres seem to be approaching.

Ogres swing their clubs and charge straight ahead, knocking down lesser monsters like orcs that surround the town.

In an attempt to prevent their invasion, magic and arrows are constantly fired from the top of the town walls, but they are not very effective because they are blocked by thick muscles.

In the blink of an eye, they have reached the town gate, but… A party of skilled adventurers leaps down from the nearby wall, rushes into battle, and engages in an evenly matched fight.

“If I had a Yamato-made gun or cannon, I could do it, but without one, that’s tough. That party won’t last long either, you know?”

“Surely, there is some in this town, right?”

“There’s no way something so expensive could be available in a remote town like this?”

My subordinate is saying things like that, but… That’s certainly true.

If we have weapons made in Yamato, we can still fight. If there were artillery, even regular soldiers could land a strong blow on a powerful monster…

“Missy! This isn’t the time to be just looking at the gate, look, the group of orcs is coming up!”

“…!”

It seems that a group of monsters is approaching our area again. We need to do something to protect it somehow…

 ……Hm?

“Hey, you.”

“What’s the matter, missy? We’re in the middle of a battle right now, so if you’re inviting me to bed, you’ll have to wait until later.”

“….Huh? Bed? What do you mean? More importantly, look at the forest.”

“Forest? Ah, something is glowing.”

Yes, something is glowing in the forest. Judging by the light, it seems to be by some kind of magic, but… I don’t know.

For a moment, I stare at the light silently.

A few seconds later… That light shone even more brightly for just a moment. And then…

“…Hey, soldier over there. Something is getting closer…”

“This is bad, lass, that’s a magic bullet! How powerful!”

M-magic bullet? Is it that thing where you shoot out a mass of magical power as it is, and attack the enemy? So, did the monsters receive covering fire from within the forest?

That light bullet is coming straight at me… T-this is bad…! I can’t dodge it…

I involuntarily close my eyes and tense up.

I’m done for. The moment after I had that thought, my body was pushed down by someone… Explosion.

The magic bullet landed very close by and seemed to have exploded, but there was no pain. It seems I am safe.

“Good grief, that was dangerous. This is why amateurs are…”

When I fearfully opened my eyes, there was a blond man. Slender, but tall, with long fingers. The black military attire resembles that worn by the Führer Eryutheia of the Yamato Empire in place of civilian clothing.

The Nazis? It seems that their outfit is modeled after the military uniforms of those people.

A thin sword on his waist, could it be a type of rapier?

The man grabbed my hand and quickly lifted me up, and then, without turning, delivered a single slash of his sword to the orc who had used the chaos caused by the magic bullet to climb the town walls.

He cut it down in an instant. What an amazing swordplay…

“Y-you are…”

When he heard me, the man answered. ―― Reinhard Heydrich.

“I heard a rumor that elves have been infiltrating this area. I came to this town to investigate, but I never expected something like this to happen.”

I should have brought at least a few of my men.

Saying so, Reinhard shook his head in exasperation.

……What’s with this person he might be a bit cool… No, but I have Führer Eryutheia.
