Yamato Empire Chapter 106

Chapter 106: The Elves and the Northern Bombing

At the same time as the Führer was sleeping.

Shifting the scene to a certain airfield in the southern Londeria.

There was a group of four-engine heavy bombers called Renzan lined up on the long runway. The number of aircraft would be about 140, or three squadrons.

“Let’s do this, boys. You guys ready? Did you make sure to go to the bathroom? Do you have everything? You guys remember the target’s location properly, right?”

“Hahaha, there is no need to worry, Colonel LeMay. The target is the enemy-occupied port of Scullflow. We’re going to blow up the supplies brought there by the Empire’s vaunted bombers, aren’t we?”

On board the commander’s plane is a man who to the Japanese is the devil, the scum of the earth, and a bastard, but that doesn’t begin to cover it―― Curtis LeMay.

Well, he is definitely the type of creature that is summoned by a devil.

He talks to the Yamato pilots sitting in the cockpit in an exaggerated and overly familiar manner, typical of an American.

“Oops, that’s not quite right, Captain. It’s not just supplies we’re going to blow away, we’ll also take out those elves as well. Kaboom, we’re going to turn everything to ashes in one blow, understood?”

“Understood, Colonel. But please be careful not to overdo it and get scolded by the Führer.”

“Come on, relax. Despite my behavior, the Japs gave me a medal for indiscriminate bombing. Well then, let’s set off. This time, with Operation Rolling Thunder, we will send them back to the Stone Age!”

The elves and LeMay, it’s hard to tell who the villain is anymore… Well, it’s probably not good to worry about it.

“Hehehe, if I make a great achievement in this war, maybe I can be president too.”

The Renzan accelerates down the runway for takeoff. In the cockpit, Lemay was grinning with a twisted smile on his face.

Incidentally…

There is no such thing as a president in the Yamato Empire. Perhaps his brain is still wired for the United States’ way of thinking.

Now, a few hours after the crazy American bombing squadron set out…

Scullflow, a military port in the northern part of Londeria.

Above it, the pitiful victim… Or rather, a lone man-eating bird was flying. The knight on board is a newcomer, Ikanos Meru, who just joined the Aerial Order of Elfusia this year.

“Aah, I’m bored. The enemies aren’t going to come this far back, so how long am I supposed to keep flying?”

He mumbles this on the back of a man-eating bird in his spare time.

―― The rear.

Yes, for the elves, Scullflow is no longer the enemy territory.

Scullflow was operating as a base for the Londeria Navy until just the other day.

However, they fell before the advance of the elves who landed in the northern part of Londeria. It had become one of the elves’ major supply ports.

Furthermore, even after this port was secured, the advance of the elves did not stop and the front line quickly moved south.

Scullflow, on the northern edge of Londeria, quickly became a rear base, even though it had not been occupied for long.

So the mission of this novice Knight, Ikanos, is to fly patrols to protect this rear base.

In the northern part of Londeria, where the infrastructure is underdeveloped, a decent port like Scullflow that can accommodate large ships is extremely rare.

If this port is lost, Elfusia will have difficulty resupplying by ship, and the resupply capabilities will significantly decline. It is not an exaggeration to say so.

As this patrol flight protects such an important supply base, it is a crucial mission that has a bearing on the future of the motherland.

“Sigh, there’s no way an enemy will come this far back, and there’s too much free time. Even though the seniors are still fighting on the front lines…”

……It was supposed to be that way, but Ikanos-kun completely let his guard down.

Indeed, without properly looking around at his surroundings, he carelessly continued his flight while yawning.

For the elves who keep up their triumphant progress, it was inconceivable that their rear base would be threatened.

However, that carelessness was fatal.

Certainly, Scullflow is located at the rear of the Elfusia army, away from the front line. However, in this world, there are plenty of weapons capable of blowing away such rear bases.

Transport ships of all sizes fill the vast bay.

A large quantity of supplies needed to support 100,000 officers and soldiers of the Elfusia ground forces being stored at the port.

Small arms and armor for infantry, maintenance parts for heavy golems, food, clothing, and liquid mana in barrels.

All of these are strategically important to the war effort that must not be lost.

If all of these supplies are lost… Something like that should be understood without having to be said.

And the devil summoned into this world is a man who mercilessly burns even civilians. They are not so kind as to overlook such an enemy’s weak point.

In the sky 7,000 meters above Scullflow.

A distance far in the sky that even man-eating birds cannot reach. For the elves, who do not have useful things like oxygen masks, this is unknown territory that they cannot even imagine.

That is where a group of state-of-the-art aircraft Renzan, which had just departed from an airfield in the south of the country, were flying, forming countless combat boxes.

“Alright, boys, how you doing?”

“It’s going well, Colonel LeMay. Other than several aircraft turned back due to engine trouble, there is no damage.”

“I see, well, that’s fine. I can’t say the weather is nice today, but it’s my first debut in another world. I have to make it flashy.”

Having said that, Lemay lightly tapped the pilot’s shoulder. What’s with this guy, why he’s so body-touchy? Could it be that he has that kind of sexual preference?” The Yamato soldiers looked at him with disapproving looks, but the American didn’t seem to care.

Now, about that crazy American-led bomber squad… There was no way the elves would not have found them.

Well, it’s because there’s a huge formation of 140 massive four-engine heavy bombers.

The first to spot the bombing squadron was Ikanos-kun, who was on a patrol mission.

He was enjoying his peaceful and uneventful patrol duty in a relaxed manner, before the situation changed with him noticing the sudden roaring engine sounds of over 100 heavy bombers flying overhead.

When he looked up to see what the noise was, he saw the shadow of huge aircraft and countless contrails.

“H-hey, what’s that? There are countless of them! Not only that, i-it’s huge! Isn’t that like a flying fortress…”

He was perplexed.

It should be a safe patrol mission in the rear, but somehow a mysterious giant flying object is approaching. Moreover, it’s a number that easily exceeds 100.

What’s more, that flying object is making a menacing roar and is approaching at an unbelievable speed.

“I can’t believe it, could it be a new weapon from that country called Yamato?”

What should I do? After a bit of hesitation, he decided to approach it for the time being to understand what it is.

He ordered his steed to ascend in order to approach the invading bombers that were leaving countless contrails in the sky.

However…

“Damn it, I can’t catch up. They are so huge, even more than me, and yet… Is it faster than the man-eater!?”

Ikanos yells.

His steed is desperately flapping its wings. But instead of getting closer, the bombers mockingly move farther and farther away.

The maximum speed of the bomber Renzan is 280 km/h. It’s somewhat slower than a World War II bomber and about as fast as bombers from the interwar period.

It’s a speed that feels a bit underperforming to be called a high-speed bomber.

However, the top speed of Ikanos’ beloved steed, man-eating bird is only 100 km/h. It is about the same as the fighters from the early stages of World War I.

With a speed difference of nearly three times, there is no way to catch up.

Besides…

“Huff… Huff… I-it’s getting harder to breathe… I can’t go any further…”

The bombers fly at an altitude of more than 7,000 meters, the height at which man-eating birds cannot fly.

At this altitude, it is difficult to fly without an oxygen mask, and of course, Ikanos, who does not have such a luxury, will face a struggle against oxygen deficiency.

With sheer determination, he surpasses the man-eating bird’s operational altitude limit of 3,000 meters and ascends to 5,000 meters, but…

That’s the limit.

He could do nothing but watch in despair as the bombing squadron passed over him.

And then…

“Hey, boys. Can you see it? Look, our target the Scullflow is right below us. Those damn elves, they’re piling up supplies at the port without any caution. Alright, let’s blow it away completely. Lower the altitude to 2000.”

“Yes? At an altitude of 2,000, Colonel LeMay? At such a low altitude, there’s a possibility of being intercepted…”

“You won’t be able to hit the target if you drop it from a high altitude. It’s a waste of precious bombs. We will descend to a low altitude and blow everything away with a single blow! Let’s bring their civilization down to the level it was 10,000 years ago, back to the Stone Age!”

Upon arriving at Scullflow, the bombing squadron, following LeMay’s orders, suddenly dropped in altitude.

To position themselves to carry out a bombing raid.

It’s LeMay’s specialty, low-altitude bombing.

“S-stop it! Stop, please stop!”

Far behind the bombers, Ikanos shouts as he watches the bombers rush into the port. He instinctively understood that the port would blow up if he didn’t do something about it.

However, unable to catch up with the bombers and left far behind, the only thing Ikanos could do was shout meaninglessly.

There was no way Lemay could care less about such a pathetic existence.

The bombers dropped bombs one after another on the terrified faces of the elves in Scullflow.

“Uh oh, this is bad! Something rushing towards us! It’s a big one!”

“What is our air knight brigade doing!? Hurry up and knock that thing down!”

The elves screamed and desperately ran away for their lives.

But it’s too late. Too late for anything.

The bomb bay doors of heavy bomber Renzan are opened and 2 tons of bombs loaded on each bomber are dropped at various locations in Scullflow.

Then all you have to do is let gravity do its job and let the falling bombs do the rest.

It exploded.

The weight of the bombs dropped by these 140 bombers was approximately 300 tons. If it were a typical underdeveloped fantasy city, it would be able to pulverize even a large city in one blow.

The warehouse was completely destroyed, the supplies burned, and even the docked transport ship sank in the aftermath.

Even the elves in the port could not escape the bombing, and many of them were blown away by the bombs that rained down on them before they had time to realize what had happened.

“Ah ahh… Oh no…”

While looking down at the Scullflow from which black smoke was rising, Ikanos murmured.

What was there was a mountain of burning rubble, countless corpses, and the screams of wounded elves. The modern air attack that the elves experienced for the first time was exactly like the hell they had imagined.

As a result, 70 percent of the Elfusia army’s supplies that had been stockpiled in Scullflow were completely destroyed.

“Boys, did you see that? The plan is perfect! Strategic bombing is indeed supreme, I won’t lose to those weak cabbage bastards who rely on dive bombing.”

“Hahaha…”

Due to the great success, LeMay is overjoyed in the cockpit of Renzan, while the Yamato soldiers have a wry smiles on their faces.

Incidentally, ‘cabbage bastard’ is a type of slang that refers to Germans. A German who likes dive bombing, you probably already know who he is.

Recently, the Yamato Empire has become more international, and there are various factions.

Furthermore, even though Ikanosu-kun survived the bombing… After returning to the base, he was blamed for the failure of the Scullflow defense and was executed by his comrades for being a “capitalist dog who helplessly missed the enemy’s attack.”

It seems that the elves are not monolithic.
